Higher Scores Test Prep

Higher Scores test prep strives for a personal and relatable approach to tutoring students. Higher scores focus is not only on coaching students but also on providing support to the students’ full families. Gaggioli realized that study time and cost of private tutoring took a toll on the parents of students. That’s why she made this course.

Let’s jump into the Higher Scores ACT Test Prep course and review its tutoring & coaching services, course features, and study materials to see if Higher Scores is right for you to improve your ACT score.

Course Overview

Higher Scores test prep course is designed to give students all of the study materials they need to score higher on the ACT without breaking their parents’ budget.

The expert instructors created the robust curriculum to trim study times and give students the knowledge they need to be confident on exam day.

Students also have unlimited email access to the prep tutors. This allows students to ask and receive answers to whatever questions they may have.

Higher Scores test prep offers two major ACT prep courses. Each course package includes slightly different resources at slightly different prices.

ACT Quick Prep package

First, there is the ACT Quick Prep package. This costs about $187. It is a 10-day study course to be completed within two weeks. It is ideal for students who cannot devote the recommended time of 6-12 weeks to prepare for the ACT.

It consists of video tutorials, a study guide, and a practice test. Students also receive a one-year subscription to the Cash for College newsletter.

ACT Complete Package

There is also the ACT Complete Package. This costs up to $647. The curriculum is divided into various segments of 24 days. According to Higher Scores policy, a day is considered 3 hours.

The goal is that students complete the course within 6-12 weeks, and ideally, the course is to end within one or two weeks of the actual ACT date. Students receive a study guide, prep books, video tutorials, and ACT practice tests.

They also have access to other bonus materials, such as the PSAT Quick Prep Course. This provides study materials and strategies for students taking the PSAT.

Course Features

Dashboard and Course Software

The dashboard for this course is quite simple and easy to operate. It does not include clustered icons or complicated operations. The layout of all the materials required by the student is quite clear, and the dashboard is responsive.

It is easy to navigate and control each study unit located on the dashboard. In addition, it has a virtual classroom designed to be conducive and user-friendly for learning.

Video Lectures

The course provides students with online and On-Demand videos for study purposes. However, the content, structure, and length vary according to the course chosen.

For example, the ACT Complete Package course offers students video tutorials containing over 80 scoring strategies to aid their knowledge and study. In addition, the course also provides students with video answers. These are videos that have answers to questions asked by students. Usually, the tutorial videos consist of a section where students can ask their instructors questions.

The instructors will then send a personalized video of answers to such questions. On the other hand, the ACT Quick Prep provides students with video tutorials that are 4 hours long, content strategies, and practice questions.

These help students have a deep insight into pertinent topics, which aids mastery in their preparation for the ACT.

Course Analytics and Tracking

The course technology enables students to track their performance by keeping track of their ACT study plan. The technology also gives students the chance to submit technical questions through the in-course Q&A portal.

Instructors will then respond with personalized videos or emails. This gives students a personal connection with the test program and a custom-made experience.

Study Materials

The ACT Complete Package provides students with a 24-day study guide. The study guide contains on-demand assignments each day. It also provides a step-by-step approach to taking the test, including different strategies and concepts students need to grasp for better understanding.

They also give additional study materials such as ACT Prep books and two full-length ACT practice tests. Another such study material is the PSAT Quick Prep Course. This course also provides strategies and techniques for acing the SAT.

The ACT Quick Prep provides a 10-day study guide with on-demand but optional assignments. It also includes video answers to students.

The Complete Package offers more study resources than Quick prep as it even offers study materials not only for the ACT but also for the SAT.

Flashcards

Higher Scores test prep does not provide flashcards to students for its ACT courses. Many students and users have criticized this for quite some time.

This is because flashcards enhance memorization and study the course program itself. This has made students use flashcards produced by other companies, and this is not always advised. These flashcards are designed for additional test prep courses and may not apply to the Higher Scores curriculum.

Quick Tip! Rather than buying flashcards from another test prep company, make your own based on the Higher Scores course. This way they will not only match the course, but you will learn while hand writing the cards. Win-win.

Support

The Cash for College Workshop has been an effective way for Higher Scores test prep to support their students over time. It is a 1-hour course designed to teach students and their families to monetize excellent test prep scores.

Students can also send emails and receive answers to their questions whenever they need to. Students can also reach out to the Head of testing for information regarding the ACT or SAT exams.

Cash for College Workshop

Another distinctive feature of the Higher Scores test prep institute is providing full family support for students. The goal is to teach students how to earn scholarships for excelling in the ACT exams.

In line with this, all test prep courses include the Cash for College Workshop. This workshop teaches students to turn their excellent test scores into free tuition funds through scholarships and grants.

They also provide bonus materials like the Cash for College newsletter that are designed to give students an edge in their college applications.

Students can see how they can monetize their test scores, get in-depth answers to critical questions, and more knowledge of test-taking strategies.

Money Back Guarantee

Higher Scores offers a money-back guarantee and no service fee is required upon a refund request. This is a crazy deal that most other ACT prep companies don’t offer.

If you are satisfied with your course, they will give you your money back. No questions asked. No weird stipulations. You just email them and tell them why you weren’t satisfied and you get a refund. No other course offers a refund policy like that!

Course Features

Dashboard and Course Software

Prep Expert provides a virtual classroom for this course, and the platform is mostly unique for its simplicity. The virtual classroom is designed to be user-friendly and conducive for all its learning activities.

Its most prominent feature is a virtual whiteboard, with the instructor’s video next to it. Users can chat with each other and ask questions using the chatbox. The dashboard quickly displays classes, tasks, books, and practice exams, making it suitable for easy access.

This learning platform is up-to-date and is designed to be functional as there are no distractions or unnecessary clutters. This makes it easy for users to give optimum focus to each lesson.

Video Lectures

The course packages contain video lectures that guide you through different sections of the course and practice questions to work with. In addition, there are live streams of most lessons, including a chatbox allowing students to interact with each other and the instructor.

This feature encourages participation and allows the instructors to use different techniques by using Adobe Connect.

As such, interaction with the tutor is considered a standard requirement. This is achieved by a polling feature that requires students to complete polls as proof of their attendance. This is an effective way to ensure that students are adequately engaged and not quickly lose focus.

Practice Exams and Questions

These videos demonstrate his proven strategies and the best ways to apply them in practice tests and essays. The course package also provides access to 6 ACT course books. All of these books cover all sections of the ACT exams.

Depending on the course package, students can access their dashboard and study materials for up to 2 months after their last session or more. This is very useful for students who perform lower than their expectations because they can use these study materials to prepare for a retake without retaking the course.

Flashcards

However, there is a possibility that updated versions of the course might include flashcards.

Score Improvement Guarantee

Another outstanding quality of Prep Expert is its score improvement guarantees. If, after taking this course, your score does not improve at all, you are entitled to a full refund. The guarantees, however, vary depending on the course opted for.

For instance, if you take the 6-week course and have a starting score of 28 or less, you have a guaranteed score increase of 4 points. The only requirement for these guarantees is completing your prep course and taking the actual ACT.

These have sparked students’ interest in considering Prep Expert as a credible ACT exams prep institute.

Kaplan ACT

They have an extensive collection of materials and various courses to help candidates prepare for numerous exams.

In addition, they have an excellent track record of coaching students for all standardized tests. Many students choose Kaplan solely because of their ACT tutoring.

Let’s check out the Kaplan ACT prep course and review all of its features, tutoring services, and study materials to see if Kaplan will help you increase your ACT score.

Course Overview

The Kaplan act prep course covers every subject and topic on the ACT. The study materials are easy-to-understand and easy to navigate.

Kaplan goes all out to ensure you have all the relevant documents you need for the exams. In addition, they go the extra length of integrating official ACT questions, and practice tests into their prep.

One great advantage of this course is that Kaplan offers personalized homework assigned to each student by their tutors. This helps you focus on strengthening your weak areas and understanding the topics that give you the most trouble.

Kaplan ACT course comes with enough flexibility to accommodate students with busy schedules. The Kaplan ACT course comes in 3 different formats:

1. Live online
2. Self-paced
3. Online tutoring

Live Online ACT Course

The live online course lets you join a virtual classroom anywhere you are, and you get tutored by a top-rated ACT teacher. Students can also interact with the teachers during a class session.

While the live classes are ongoing, offline tutors are also at your disposal to answer your questions in a private chat. This course from Kaplan grants you access to 5 official practice tests from the ACT makers.

It includes an ACT prep book, a customizable question bank of over 2,000 ACT questions, and 16 hours of live instruction.

This live online course sells for $499. This course is quite expensive, though Kaplan allows for payment in installment but only for 3 months.

Self-Paced ACT Course

Some companies emphasize affordability; others emphasize flexibility. The self-paced course from Kaplan lies somewhere in between both. This course gives affordable and quality materials for students to achieve their high score goals.

The self-paced course is cheaper than the live online course. However, it offers way less than the live online course. This course gives you access to 5 official practice tests from the ACT makers, 6 months of access to the material, 30 on-demand teacher-led lessons, and a customizable bank with 2000+ official act questions.

The self-paced course goes for $99, a reasonable price for the quality and volume of material available for your use.

Online Tutoring ACT Course

The online tutoring course is the most expensive of all ACT courses offered by Kaplan, but it provides much more than the other alternatives. The tutoring starts with a diagnostic, pointing out your strengths and areas to improve.

Then you will have one-on-one courses tailored so you can focus on the right content to maximize the time of your prep.

The online tutoring course comes with hours of private one-on-one tutoring with an expert, official practice tests from the makers of the ACT exam, a customizable q-bank with thousands of questions, and the best, personalized homework assigned to you by your tutor.

For $699, you can purchase the online tutoring course and have your tutor tailor your study guide to your needs.

Course Features

Dashboard and course software

Kaplan ACT dashboard interface is modern and sleek. The dashboard makes it easy to locate your video lessons, study materials, and track your progress through the course.

This is your home base for the review course. It has a simple, consistent user interface with easy navigation.

Exam question banks

One unique feature of Kaplan’s act course is its practice question test bank that allows you to create personalized quizzes, review specific questions, and give you a report of your overall progress.

Using the Qbank is simple. You can quiz yourself on any ACT subject such as reading and science. You can also question yourself on subcategories like “punctuation” and “geometry.”

In addition, the ACT scoring system has similar subcategories as the Qbank, giving you insight into how the ACT evaluates specific skills.

Practice Tests

Kaplan has more ACT practice tests than most any other prep course. This means you won’t get stuck seeing the same questions over and over again until you memorize the answers.

In addition, you get access to 5 practice tests that allow you to familiarize yourself with the actual format of the ACT.

Kaplan’s ACT course doesn’t just teach you about science, reading, and math; its materials teach you how to properly take an exam, using proven strategies that include managing your time correctly.

In addition, these practice tests simulate real-life test experiences. Hence, experiencing the different practice exams will help you improve your prep for the ACT.

The only downside is that the practice questions have no written solution or explanation. Instead, they just say which answer is correct or not, and that’s it.

Study textbook and material

Kaplan provides students with an ACT prep ebook. On its own, the ebook is practical, but that isn’t enough compared to actual courses when it comes to testing a student’s aptitude or adapting to the student’s studying needs.

This ebook doesn’t come with the self-paced course. However, Kaplan has a standalone ACT prep book that is great, so you are good to go if you have that.

The great thing about this is that students can read through chapters explaining strategies and concepts and review them through video lessons, practice tests, and quizzes.

In addition, students who find it difficult to read on a computer can purchase the hardcopy or pay for the online tutoring course, which gives you a hardcopy of the prep book.

Video lectures

Kaplan has an extensive library of video lessons that students can watch throughout the course. What makes Kaplan’s videos unique is the integration with their live online course. You don’t simply watch pre-recorded  videos. You interact with the videos and the instructors. The live online course gives you access to:

• Live class sessions
• 16 hours of live online instructions
• 1-on-1 session with a professional ACT tutor

You’ll get a full 6 months access to these resources. In addition, the live online course shows clearly that Kaplan prioritizes interactions with instructors, which helps improve the overall learning process.

Who is Kaplan ACT Prep right for?

Kaplan makes some of the best ACT prep study materials. They are perfect for students who want more individualized attention. The Kaplan program offers extensive tutoring, so if you want to see and talk with your instructor, this would be a great option for you.

It works especially well for busy students who don’t want to be tied to a live lesson course structure. The self-paced course can be taken any time it is convenient.

ACT Reading Practice Tips

Here are the most useful ACT tips for the Reading section that will help improve your test taking skills and ACT score.

Multiple-choice Strategies

The answers are in multiple choices, and the best way to answer questions is by eliminating incorrect answers first. Sometimes, a single word in the answer can make it wrong, so always find flaws in answers and cross the wrong ones. Then, instead of looking to find the correct answer, look for a reason to eliminate the other three to remain with the correct choice.

Answer every question

In the ACT, there is no wrong answer penalty, so you should attempt all questions. Even if there are questions, you are unsure of their answers, you can guess the answer. You should identify your guessing letter before the test but still look for the closest option after eliminating the wrong choices.

Understand the comprehension question types

• Detail questions– these are questions that will ask information about a specific part of the passage.
• Function questions- These questions ask the purpose of a particular part of the text.
• Global questions- they ask about the whole passage
• Inference & Writer’s View questions- These questions test your ability to make inferences, and they ask you if you understand something that is not stated in the text
• Vocab-in-Context questions– these are questions that will ask you about the meaning of the particular word as used in the text.

Understand the comprehension question trap answer types

• Distortion- these are answers that twist the passage details to confuse you in getting the correct answer.
• Extreme- they are too extreme to show the author’s purpose, and they include words such as never, always, worst or best, among others.
• Misused detail- this will be a true statement from the text but not one answering the question.
• Opposite- these answers will contact the details provided in the text
• Out-of-scope- they include information, not in the passage.

Use the line references for context

Line references are important to help you find information from the text. You should read around the reference line to find your answer. Pick the answer you believe to be correct, then re-read the context to find support for that answer choice. For instance, if the question references line 10, you should read lines 8 through to 12 to find the answer.

Make sure your ACT Calculator is Allowed for the Test

Accepted calculators include Texas Instrument that is permitted in high school math classes. Notably, advanced versions of calculators might not be allowed. Always check to ensure your calculator is allowed.

A calculator is essential but don’t be too dependent on it and always check your work to confirm your answers. Speed and accuracy are very vital in the ACT. Although the calculator is an important gadget in checking your answers, it should only be used as a substitute since it can be counterproductive when to comes to step-by-step detail-conscious problem-solving.

Memorize Common Math Formulas

It would be best to memorize important math equations and formulas such as the Pythagoras theorem and quadratic equations before the test day. Although you will be provided with some of the formulas and equations on the first page of the test, you should remember other equations and how their application.

Some of the equations and formulas to memorize include the equation of a circle, quadratic equation, equation of a line, and SOH CAH TOA. These formulas will help boost your confidence in solving the problems and save time going back and forth to look at the equations on the first page.

In addition, you can make flashcards to drill the formulas and equations until you master them. Besides the common formulas, you should also memorize common percentages, values and ratios, and common shapes and triangles.

Don’t focus on easy and medium level difficulty questions

All questions on the test are important, and they carry an equal number of points. However, it would be best not to rush through questions that you consider easier or moderately difficult questions to finish on time.

Often test-takers assume that they should complete questions in 60 minutes without guessing some questions. Of course, problems get more difficult as you progress but rush through easy questions to tackle challenging ones, but the strategy can lead to one making mistakes, especially if you are not great in math.

The confusion start when you get your initial test results. These raw scores need to be converted into scale scores, so they can be comparable to other students across the country. This conversion process is simple, but can be a little tricky.

Let’s look at some scoring charts for the ACT along with a step-by-step score conversion process, so you can calculate your ACT score.

What is an ACT Scoring Chart?

An ACT scoring chart is a conversion table that allows you to convert your raw ACT score to a scale score and compute your total composite score.

Once you take the ACT practice test, you might want to estimate how you performed, or you might want to predict how many questions you should get correct to get a particular score. This is where the ACT score conversion chart comes in handy. The ACT score chart is a chart that has scores that guides you on how to convert your raw score into a scaled score. The raw score is the number of questions that you get right per each section.

For instance, if you answer 50 questions correctly in the Math test, then your ACT Math raw score will be 55. This score is converted into a scaled score, and the ACT Score chart is important in helping you convert the score on a scale of 1-36. 36 will be the highest score you get in the ACT. For instance, if you get a raw score of 50 in math, then your scaled score will be 30.

As you prepare for the ACT, it is vital to take a full practice test and then grade your test to get the raw score. After getting the raw score, the score chart will help you convert your raw score into a scaled score to get an idea of how you will perform on the actual test.

How are ACT Scores Calculated?

As stated, the number of questions you get right will account for your raw score. It is important to note that you will not be penalized or points deducted if you get some questions incorrect. For instance, if you get 40 questions correct in the Math test, that will be the raw score for the Math section.

Your raw score is then converted to a scaled score of 1-36. There is a scaled score for all multiple-choice sections, and for each section test, you will get subscores. The subscores indicate how many questions you git right per category. Your total ACT score will be the average of the scaled scores. You will add the Math, English, Reading, and Science section scores and then divide by 4 to get the composite score.

Remember, the composite score is always a whole number, so you should round off to the nearest whole number if you get a decimal.

ACT Score Calculator

There are several ACT score calculators available online, but you have to be careful using them. The raw to scale score conversion tables change every year, so if the calculator isn’t using the current tables, it might be calculating the wrong score.

These are useful to use as a starting point to see where your final score will end up, but you should always check their calculation against the ACT published scoring chart to make sure your score is accurate.

The last thing you want is to think you got a higher score than you did and get a surprise when you get your official results back in the mail.

ACT Raw Score vs ACT Scale Score – What’s the difference?

Raw score is the number of correctly answered questions. Notably, you get one point for every question you answered correctly and no points for incorrect or omitted answers. There is no penalty for wrong answers.

Therefore ensure you answered all questions even if it means guessing some of them answered for the difficult questions. On the other hand, a scaled score is derived from the raw score where the number of correctly answered questions will be converted on a scale of 1-36. 36

I the highest possible score you can score for each section. Also, for every multiple choice question, you receive a scaled score.

What is an ACT Composite Score and How is it Calculated?

A composite ACT score is the average of the section scores. To calculate your composite score, you add the Math, English, Reading, and Science scaled score and then divide it by four. The score is always rounded to a whole number.

Each section will include the number of questions you have correctly answered and the proportion of the correctly answered questions. Since the composite ACT score is an average, you can still get less than a 36 in one of the ACT sections and get a perfect score.

For instance, if you score 34 in maths,36 in English, 36 in Science, and 36 in reading, your composite score will be 35.5, but this is rounded to 36 to give you a perfect score.

How to Calculate your ACT Score using a Scoring Chart

Raw ACT scores will not always fit into the same scaled score. There are variations depending on the questions’ level of difficulty. Therefore there is o on-size-fit-all ACT scaled score chart that one can use to convert raw scores. To estimate your score, you can use the available conversion chart on the ACT practice test.

For instance, if you get 70 out of 75 questions correct in English, 57 out of 60 in Maths, 36 out of 40 in Science, and 36 out of 40 in reading, your raw scores will be 70, 57, 36, and 36.

On the conversion chart, a 70 raw score in English is scaled to 33, a 57 score in Math to 34, a 36 in Science is scaled to 30, and a 36 in reading is scaled to 33. Therefore your composite score will be (33+34+30+33)/4= 32.5 rounded to 33.

It is vital to point there is no redistribution to receive a normalized curve even if most test-takers get low scores. The curve in the ACT is for correcting minor fluctuations in test difficulty.

But, generally, your score will always remain the same as you scored in the test. The process of addressing the fluctuations in test difficulty is called equating. It ensures that ACT scores for various jurisdictions will reflect the same ability levels irrespective of with whom or when you will take the ACT.
