Frequently Asked Questions About the SAT

Should I guess on the SAT?

In short: yes, if you guess strategically. On multiple choice questions with five answers, you lose points for guessing incorrectly. But if you can cross off some of the five choices that you know are wrong, then the gamble becomes worth it.

This is all part of the SAT as a reasoning test--you are rewarded for knowing the right answer, and also for knowing that some of the answers are wrong. Sometimes in a verbal question you can nail the right answer just by eliminating the four wrong answers.
